Micro
202/Cell Biology 202
“Molecular Mechanisms of Microbial Pathogenesis”
COURSE DIRECTOR
Joanne Engel (jengel@medicine.ucsf.edu)
Micro 202/Cell Biology 202 is a graduate level
course that comprehensively covers the molecular mechanisms of microbial
pathogenesis, including bacteria, fungi, and protozoan parasites.
It does not cover viruses. It is open to students from BMS, PIBS,
Pharmaceutical Chemistry and other UCSF graduate programs.
Auditors are welcome to attend the lectures
but may not participate in the discussion sections.
COURSE DETAILS
The course is offered every other year during the Spring Quarter.
The next course will begin Spring of 2011.
The lectures will be held at Parnassus but will be video broadcast to Mission Bay. In addition to the Friday discussion section held at Parnassus, it may be possible to arrange an alternative discussion section at Mission Bay if there is sufficient interest.
PREREQUISITES
Background in bacterial and fungal genetics, molecular biology,
and cell biology.
TOPICS
The course includes lectures covering bacterial physiology, host
defense mechanisms, general principles of microbial pathogenesis,
adhesion and invasion strategies, intracellular survival strategies,
antibiotic resistance, bacterial toxins, fungal pathogenesis, parasite
pathogenesis, biofilms, and quorum sensing.
LECTURERS
A small number of faculty give the lectures. The faculty
lecturers for 2009 were:
Chip Chambers
Jeff Cox
Creg Darby
Joanne Engel
